چکیده

HONG, SUK KI, CHUN SIK PARK, YANG SAENG PARK, AND JIN KYUNG KIM. Seasonal changes of antidiuretic hormone action on sodium transport acruss frog skin. Am. J. Physiol. 215(2) : 439-443. 1968.-The stimulating effect of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) on Na transport across isolated frog skin (Runa temporuriu) was studied monthly, along with the glycogen contents of liver and muscle. ADH induced a sustained marked increase in short-circuit current (SCC) during the cold seasons, while it induced a transient slight rise in SCC during the warm seasons. Moreover, the glycogen content of the liver and muscle was markedly greater during the cold season than during the warm season. However, blood glucose and plasma free fatty acid levels showed no clear seasonal variations. When the inside bathing solution was fortified with certain substrates such as glucose, pyruvate, acetate, or P-hydroxybutyrate, the SCC increased significantly in summer frogs but not in winter frogs. Intermediates of TCA cycle were without effect in both seasons. Moreover, summer frogs which are refractory to ADH became responsive to this hormone when the inside bathing solution was fortified with pyruvate or P-hydroxybutyrate but not with other substrates. However, winter frogs responded to ADH similarly both in presence and absence of substrates. On the basis of these findings, it was postulated tentatively that the characteristic seasonal changes in the stimulating effect of ADH on Na transport across frog skin are primarily attributable to corresponding changes in the substrate content of the skin.

The Effect of Ca and Antidiuretic Hormone on Na Transport across Frog Skin

A method has been developed for determining unidirectional Na fluxes across the two faces of the transporting cells in the frog skin. The method has been used to investigate the location of the sites at which Ca and anti-diuretic hormone act to alter the rate of active Na transport across the skin. The results have indicated that the primary effect of both agents is on the Na permeability of th...

Active Sodium Uptake by the Toad and Its Response to the Antidiuretic Hormone

A method has been described in which sodium uptake may be studied in the intact, anesthetized toad. Sodium uptake is determined by "counting" the whole animal in a special chamber after suspending it in a frog Ringer bath containing radioactive Na(24). The effects of subcutaneous injection of the neurohypophyseal antidiuretic factor were studied with these results: 1. There was a pronounced inc...

Effects of lysine-vasopressin (LVP) and 1-deamino-8-D-arginine-vasopressin (dDAVP) upon electrical potential, short-circuit current and transepithelial D.C. resistance of the frog skin.

The synthetic analogue of vasopressin, 1-deamino-8-D-arginine-vasopressin (dDAVP), possesses a protracted antidiuretic activity while having practically no pressoric activity as compared to arginine-vasopressin (AVP) or lysine-vasopressin (LVP). The effects of LVP and dDAVP were studied on the frog skin (Rana temporaria) sodium transport as reflected by the short-circuit current (SCC) level, on...

Hormonal control of apical membrane Na transport in epithelia. Studies with fluctuation analysis

To study the mechanisms by which antidiuretic hormone and prostaglandins regulate Na transport at the apical membranes of the cells of anuran tissues, studies were done with fluctuation analysis. Epithelia of frog skin (Rana pipiens) were treated with vasopressin alone, or treated with vasopressin after inhibition of Na transport by indomethacin. The tissues were bathed symmetrically with a Cl-...

Insulin and phorbol ester stimulate conductive Na+ transport through a common pathway.

Insulin stimulates Na+ transport across frog skin, toad urinary bladder, and the distal renal nephron. This stimulation reflects an increase in apical membrane Na+ permeability and a stimulation of the basolateral membrane Na,K-exchange pump. Considerable indirect evidence has suggested that the apical natriferic effect of insulin is mediated by activation of protein kinase C. However, no direc...
